We work in the village of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Sacatepéquez, with a view of volcanos and fields of subsistent farming. Poverty is widespread but people are very community-minded and are always ready to help their neighbors.
Guatemala's deeply-rooted Mayan culture and customs are evident in the traditional, colorful handwoven textiles and costume unique to each community.
According to the World Bank:
-
55% of the population live in poverty due to limited access to basic services (including education) and productive job opportunities
-
Frequent natural disasters are also key contributors to Guatemala's high poverty levels
-
The country's child malnutrition rate is among the ten highest in the world.
-
This high level of poverty is the reason for significant emigration.
